Physical Versus Mental Parenting

I remember the days of sheer physical exhaustion from chasing after my kids; always worrying if they were going to tumble down the stairs or get into some type of poison underneath the kitchen sink.  Now that the kids are six and 12, there has been a noticeable shift in my worries–especially for the 12 year old.  I no longer am physically exhausted from playing hide and seek and chasing after them down the block.  Instead, I now am in the role of “detective”.  I have to review my older daughter’s website history, her emails, her texts and various accounts like Instagram and Snapchat.  There seems to be all sorts of dangers lurking and an innocent child has no idea of the possible outcomes.

When I chat with other parents and tell them of my trials and tribulations, most are shocked.  Their first reaction is “How do you know?”  and then “How do you check?”  Ignorance is not bliss here, people.  As a parent, you must know what your child is doing online.  Parents should know every place their child goes online and should have every user name and password to every account.  I am currently creating a job aid for parents so that they know how to check the most commonly sites and apps that 11-13 year-olds are using.  Of course, things move rapidly, so fully expect to update the document regularly.

  • What things do you need to know how to do?
  • What sites does your child visit regularly?
  • Have you implemented internet “rules” that your child must follow?
  • Does your child have an email address?
  • Does your child text?

Let me know what your experience is with your child and the online environment.  Also let me know what would be helpful to know so that I can consider putting it on my document.

Maui

I had the good fortune to spend two weeks on Maui on vacation.  It was a much-needed respite from a very busy year.  It amazes me how the sun and sand can recharge me and the kids loved the balmy weather.  Our biggest decision each day was which beach to venture to for that day; knowing that the afternoons were reserved for the pool.  Marine life was abundant; fish making themselves known as soon as we walked into the water.  We sailed out to Molokini one day and snorkeled to our heart’s content.  Fish of all colors and shapes swam with us, quite unafraid.  Fortunately, the eels stayed at the bottom of the reef since they were cool to see but I really did not want a close-up.  And so, I sit at my desk now and dream of the heat warming my back, the relaxed evenings and the next time I will be able to snorkel the fabulous reefs of Maui!

Hillsboro Hops

Image

Last night baseball returned to Portland (or Hillsboro to be exact)!  We took the girls to the inaugural opening game and the evening was magical.  Magical because besides all the energy and excitement in the air, the night was beautiful and we even saw a double rainbow.  In true baseball fashion, the music was loud and there were fun events and prize giveaways between each inning.  Carli even ran across the field with a bunch of other kids as they chased the Hops mascot.

The Hillsboro Hops are the single A team for Arizona.  I prefer the true athlete that is still excited about the game, rather than just the paycheck so single A players are fine for me.  We only stayed through the fourth inning but got home at 10 p.m. (three hours past Pearl’s bedtime).  Even though the hour was late, the kids did not seem to mind; a good time was had by all!  Check them out if you can!

Pizza Night

The other night we had friends over after work.  I decided pizza would be easiest on me and satisfying for everyone-adults and kids.  I typically make my own dough, but I was short on time so I decided to try Grand Central Bakery’s pizza dough out of their freezer.  It turned out to be light and airy and I would definitely use it again.  And as an added bonus, if you have their cookbook, the recipe is included!

I made two veggies, one pepperoni and sausage and one pepperoni and pineapple.  An added bonus was that it was so nice, we got to eat outside!

Red Ridge Farms

We went to Dundee to stay with Eric’s parents overnight for the Thanksgiving holiday.  Despite the downpour today, I really wanted to go on a little field trip to the gorgeous countryside that surrounds Dundee.  It is amazing how many wineries there are.  I have had my eye on Red Ridge Farms, in particular.  It is Oregon’s first olive grove.  Apparently they have over 13,000 olive trees over 17 acres.   We tasted seven different oils and the lemon-infused was my favorite.  We also tried three different balsamic vinegars; the fig was my favorite and the passionfruit was Eric’s favorite.  Needless to say we picked up a few bottles to take home and a few Christmas gifts, too.  The scenery was stunning and the grounds were beautifully landscaped.  I can only imagine how picturesque it would be during a sunny summer day!  It would be a great place for an event or party, too.  We will definitely go back!

We then headed over to the quaint town of Carlton for lunch.  There were several tasting rooms and unique lunch spots

and gift shops.  We had a great field trip today.  It is fun to not let the weather dictate what we did today.  And even though the girls protested being out in the rain, I think they came home pretty satisfied, also.

Gratitude

Today was my last day of vacation.  We take an annual trip the week leading up to Labor Day to Sunriver, OR or otherwise known as the high desert.  I always know that the week will be filled with biking, tennis, swimming, eating and good times with friends.  Since the elevation is 4200 feet I usually find myself reluctant to run.  This year, though, I managed to run three times!  The first time was the first day I arrived.  My friend Amy asked me to go with her.  I figured I wouldn’t get lost on the myriad of paths if I went with someone.  I huffed and puffed and pushed myself to run 30 minutes.  Then on Saturday, equipped with my daughter’s iPod, I ran 40 minutes.  I never run with music so it was great to have the extra motivation.  Then today, as soon as I woke up, I decided to run while my husband packed up the car.  Again armed with the iPod, I set my goal at 45 minutes and managed to run 50.  I actually felt strong…as if the elevation no longer bothered me.  As I was breathing in the crisp, fresh air and looking at the blue, blue sky, I reveled in my luckiness.  I managed to see 10 deer on my run, too.  And I felt such gratitude and knew I must cherish times like this…the quiet, the strength, the determination and the feeling of success.

So much success, I came home and registered for the October  21st Run Like Hell 10k.  Join me if you want.

Purely Portland

Today we did the Providence Bridge Pedal.  Although we have biked it before, this was the first time with both kids.  There was the 6, 8 or 10 bridge option.  I opted for sure-thing (given the kids) and went with the six bridge option.  It is amazing that a city  of Portland’s size can figure out how to move thousands of people over its 10 beautiful bridges!

We biked to the start of the race from our home, as well as, back at the end so we guessed we did about 15-16 miles.  With the kids, 16 miles is awesome!  And the kids even agreed that it was a beautiful way to begin a Sunday morning.  We did see one bicycle accident but in pure Portland style, people stopped and helped.  At another spot, caution tape came loose and started to tangle in people’s bikes and once again, people got off their bikes to help out.  I know we have serious bicyclists in this city, but it is nice to see people willing to interrupt their ride to help others.  In other words…purely Portland!

Making Mozzarella Part Two

Not sure why my words did not show up on my last post, but here goes again…

I have always wanted to learn to make mozzarella cheese since it is one of my favorites…all you need is olive oil and basil and prefection has been reached.  I purchased a cheese kit from Urban Cheese Craft .  It is a straight forward and simple process and the kit contains everything you need except the gallon of milk.  The kit contains enough supplies to make 10 batches, which means I will be in cheese heaven for a while!

My cheese progressed exactly as the directions said until the end when I needed to stretch it.  I think I overheated it during the last heating session because it was really difficult to stretch.  Of course, the true test comes tomorrow when I taste it…I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Family Glue

Last night I met my friend Victoria to celebrate her new job.  We commiserated about the elusive work/life balance, motherhood, bosses, sacrifices and other trivial gossip.  We munched on appetizers and dinner, drank flowing wine and took a few bites of two disappointing desserts that descriptions sounded better than they actually tasted.  At nine p.m. I noted a call from home but chose to ignore it as I enjoyed my few hours of freedom.

I arrived home at 10 p.m. weary from so much talking and laughing.  It was a good weary…a satisfied weary.  I immediately heard my ten-year old stomp down the stairs in record time.  She launched herself to my chest with a thud as tears streamed down her cheeks.

I asked, “What’s wrong?”

She tearfully replied, “You were gone so long!”

It is great to feel missed and needed but I had left at six p.m. with the meal prepared, homework completed and piano practiced.  Four hours away.  I rarely , and I mean rarely, go out by myself.  Yet, for my daughter the hours seemed indefinite.  And no matter how overdue I felt my reprieve was, it quickly came to an end with three little words, “I missed you”.  Ah, the joy and duty of motherhood.
